Floods

After 2 winters of no flooding in Fletcher Moss Park the Environment Agency opened the sluice gates at the River Mersey to release water into the park in the early morning of 1st January 2025. Shortly after midnight on New Year’s Day the river rose to its highest level yet. As a result the embankmen ts were breached and the flood waters rose to their highest, stretching across Stenner Lane, near the old barn. A nearby resident was rescued by the fire service. It was an unhappy day for one car owner! Much of the park was closed until the waters returned to the river. The Environment Agency has helicopters dropping bags of rock and sand on the breached embankments and is working along with the Council to plan more permanent protection for houses near the park and along Palatine Road. It is very important that, for safety reasons, visitors do not go through the “foorpaths closed signs” until the helicopter work is completed. Any persons seen by the pilots will stop their flying and halt work.

We are grateful for all the messages of support following the flooding. We will organise a clear up day when it is safe to do so and will give the date on this website. In the meantime do please feel free to come and join the volunteers on Wednesday afternoons at 1pm. They meet near the Visitor Centre in the Croft.

Fletcher Moss Park is frequently used as a flood reservoir by the Environment Agency. Areas may be closed off when there is heavy rainfall. Following flooding,  areas are likely to be very muddy and may remain closed off for some time.
